Why is Ratha Saptami Also Called Achala Saptami?

by Deepak Rawat on Feb 04, 2025
Why is Ratha Saptami Also Called Achala Saptami?

Discover Why Ratha Saptami is Also Known as Achala Saptami and Its Spiritual Significance in Bestowing Stability, Good Health, and Prosperity Through the Sun God’s Blessings.

Ratha Saptami, also known as Magha Saptami, is dedicated to Bhagwan Surya. It falls on the seventh day (Saptami) of Shukla Paksha in the Magha month. This day marks the beginning of Bhagwan Surya Dev enlightening the world, making it his symbolic birthday, also known as Surya Jayanti.

The day of Ratha Saptami is regarded as very fortunate. It has the same importance as Surya Grahan for carrying out Dan-Punya, or good deeds. On this day, worshipping Bhagwan Surya and keeping a fast aids in the purification of all sins. Seven types of sins—sins done intentionally or unintentionally, with the body, thoughts, or speech, in this life or previous lives—are said to be forgiven.By worshipping Surya Dev on this day, one attains purity and divine blessings.

Rituals and Observances

On Ratha Saptami, devotees perform a sacred bath (Snan) during the Arunodaya period. This bath is a crucial ritual and must be taken before sunrise. The Arunodaya period lasts for approximately one and a half hours before sunrise. Taking a bath at this time is believed to cleanse ailments and ensure good health. Due to this belief, Ratha Saptami is also called Arogya Saptami. Bathing in a river or natural water body is preferred, but if unavailable, a bath at home is also accepted.

After bathing, devotees worship Bhagwan Surya at sunrise by offering Arghyadan. This involves offering water to Bhagwan Surya using a small Kalash (copper or brass pot) while standing and facing the sun. The water is poured slowly with folded hands in Namaskar Mudra. This act symbolizes devotion and gratitude.

Following Arghyadan, a pure ghee Deepak is lit to honor Surya Dev. Devotees also use Kapoor (camphor), Dhup (incense), and red flowers for worship. By performing these rituals with devotion, one gains longevity, health, and prosperity.

Significance of Ratha Saptami

According to Hindu scriptures, Ratha Saptami marks the transition of Surya Dev towards the northern hemisphere, symbolizing knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment. It represents the movement of Surya Dev’s chariot, driven by seven horses, across the sky. These seven horses signify the seven colors of light and the seven days of the week, indicating cosmic balance and divine rhythm.

Observing Ratha Saptami rituals purifies the body and soul. It is believed to remove past karmic debts and bestow divine blessings. Devotees who observe fasting and donate on this day receive immense merit and blessings from Surya Dev. It is also a significant day for farmers, as Surya Dev is considered the giver of energy and prosperity.

Ratha Saptami is celebrated across India, especially in temples dedicated to Bhagwan Surya. Major Sun temples such as the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha and Suryanar Temple in Tamil Nadu witness grand festivities. Devotees visit temples to seek blessings and participate in special pujas and homas.

Achala Saptami

This day is also referred to as Achala Saptami. The word “Achala” means immovable or steady. It signifies stability and unwavering devotion to Surya Dev. Worshipping Bhagwan Surya on Achala Saptami grants spiritual strength and removes obstacles in life. It is believed that one who observes this day with faith will receive divine protection and guidance.

Health and Spiritual Benefits

The practice of taking a holy bath at Arunodaya is associated with various health benefits. It helps in maintaining physical well-being and curing ailments. Sun worship on Ratha Saptami enhances mental clarity and removes negative energies. Devotees believe that it grants vitality, improves focus, and aligns the mind with positive energies.

Chanting Surya Mantras, such as “Om Hrim Suryaya Namah,” during worship enhances the spiritual effects of the rituals. Offering red flowers and performing Surya Namaskar (sun salutations) further amplifies the benefits of the day.

Conclusion

Ratha Saptami is a sacred festival dedicated to Bhagwan Surya. By observing fasts, performing Arghyadan, and worshipping Surya Dev, devotees attain health, prosperity, and spiritual growth. The rituals associated with this day help purify the soul and remove karmic burdens. Celebrating Ratha Saptami with devotion brings divine blessings and ensures a life filled with positivity and righteousness.
