Who was Vallabhacharya, and Why is His Birth Celebrated?

Vallabhacharya Jayanti is celebrated every year to honour the birth anniversary of Saint  Vallabhacharya. He was a spiritual leader and one who laid a solid foundation of the Pushti Marg sector. Purnimanta lunar calendar says how Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya was born on the Ekadashi date of Krishnapaksha in the month of Vaishaka. 

Whereas, according to the Amamta lunar calendar, he was born on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha in Chaitra Month.His spiritual practices and teaching positively influenced the lives of the Vaishnava followers. Believed to be a Great devotee of Shrinathji, one of the divine forms of Shri Krishna.  

Childhood Story of Shri Vallabhacharya

As per the famous Srivallabhadigvijaya samhita, Saint Vallabhacharya was born in the forest of Camparanya after his parents, Lakshman Bhatta and Illama, fled from Varanasi due to fear of Muslim Invasion. These sources display how Vallabhacharya’s birth was a miracle, as his parents left him as an infant beneath a samī tree. 

These incidents happened before an Akashvani appeared from the sky to see Vallabhacharya alive and surrounded by fire all over. Sri Nathji Prakatya ki Varta suggests the birth of Vallabh in Agnikund in Mathura (incarnation of the Agni God).

However, Hawley adjusted the date as per the Braj calendar. Later, he confirmed the birth of Shri Vallabhacharya in 1478. He was born in a Telugu Brahmin family. At the age of 8 years old, he was interested in studying Hindu philosophy. Vallabhacharya eventually became the master of various Sanskrit samhitas while he was merely 11 years old. From the different magnificent translations, the Bhagavata Puran was among his favourites.  

Vallabhaji spent his childhood days in Kashi and later shifted to Varanasi with his family. During his lifetime, he travelled to different Indian subcontinent for over 20 years to spread his teachings. 

Significantly, Vallabhacharya became one of the crucial leaders of the Bhakti movement. Also, won many debates against the followers of Advaita Vedanta. Vallabha Ji rejected materialistic pleasures and believed that through devotion towards Shriji (Shri Krishna), one can attain all household salvation. With time, he acquired many followers from the Gujrat and Gangetic plains.  

Shri Vallabhacharya’s Journey to becoming an Acharya

One day, Vallabhaji decided to participate in the debate of the Vijayanagar kingdom. The debate was against the Vaishnavas of Madhav and Shankar over the idea of God being dualistic or not. The debate was 27 days long, during which the 11-year-old Vallabhaji presented his point of view in the Tuluva Dynasty. 

However, after the end of the debate, Krishnadevraya, the king of Vijaynagar, performed the kanakabhishekam ritual ceremony of Vallabhacharya ji. It was when Vallabhaji received the titles of “Jagadguru” and “Acharya”

Shri Vallabhcharya’s Contribution to Indian Society

Vallabha Ji composed many Vedic texts during his lifetime. Some of his renowned texts are as follows:

1. Tattvarthadipanibandha – The interpretations of Hindu scriptures according to Shri Vallabhacharya’s philosophy of Suddhadvaita.
2. Sodasagrantha – A complete theology on Pustimarga and sixteen facts on Suddhadvaita.
3. Subodhini – A partial thesis on Bhagavata Puran, which included a full thesis on skandhas 1-3 and 10, whereas a partial thesis on skandhas 4,7, and 11.
4. Tattvarthadipanibandhaprakasa- An artistic composition of Tattvarthadipanibandha comprising complete 1 and 2 parts, and half of the third part.
5. Anubhasya – A divine annotation on Bhrama Sutras up to III.23

Legend Behind the celebration of Shri Vallabhacharya Jayanti 2025

Shri Vallabha Ji had a divine dream in the year 1493. In his dream, Lord Krishna told him to go to Govardhan Hill. He was instructed to install a proper swarupa of Shriji, which appeared three years ago. 

Later, in 1494, when Vallabhacharya arrived in Gokula, he had a vision where Shri Krishna granted him the Brahmasambandha mantra (mantra to cleanse the sins of the human soul). The next day, Vallabhacharya gave this mantra to Dāmodaradāsa Harasānī, who became the first member of Pustimarga. 

Later. Vallabhaji went to Govardhana Mountain, where he went to Saddu Pande’s house. Saddu Pande explained how he received a vision of Shri Krishna appeared in the form of a stone, and that he should go and place offerings to it. The divine swarupa (image) of Shri Krishna was referred to as Devadamana. Vallabhacharya later explained to Saddu Pande that it was the swarupa of  Sri Govardhananathaji ( Shri Nathji). 

According to a few Hindu Vedic texts, it is said that a cow used to stop daily near Govardhan hill while grazing. She used to shred milk daily on a particular spot. Curious about knowing what was near that spot, Shri Vallabhacharya began to dig the place, and Shri Krishna’s idol appeared before him. After which, it is believed that Lord Krishna appeared before Vallabhacharya and hugged him and blessed him, seeing his supreme devotion towards him. 

A panditji named Ramdas Chauhan was appointed by Shri Vallabhacharya ji to regularly worship and take care of the idol. However, in 1499, a rich merchant named Purnamalla Khatrī built a full-fledged temple of Shri Nathji on the place.

The auspicious day of Ekadashi starts from April 23rd 2025, at around 4:43 pm and ends on April 24th 2025, at 2:32 pm.

Religious practices that are followed on Shri Vallabhacharya Jayanti 

As Shri Vallabhacharya Jayanti coincides with Varuthini Ekadashi, it is celebrated by worshipping the idol of Lord Vishnu. Devotees observe fast and perform holy prayers with chanting in the temple. People visit the Krishna temple and perform Abhishekam. Panditji and the priest sing glories and devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna. Yagnas are organised at many Shriji Temples. 

Homes and religious places are decorated with colourful flower torans, and a jhanki is rotated in every home by the followers of Vallabhacharya. Rath utsava is organised in every Krishna temple. This festival is celebrated with devotion and joy in parts of Chennai, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The day is celebrated with the distribution of prasad after pooja and ends with mystical works and the contribution of Shri Vallabhacharya Ji to society.

Conclusion

Vallabhacharya Jayanti 2025 marks the 546th Birth Anniversary of Shri Vallabhacharya. The day is dedicated to seeking blessings from Shri Nathji (forms of Lord Krishna). Whereas, the atmosphere is filled with love, devotion, values, discipline and teachings of Shri Vallabhacharya Ji. It emphasises the spiritual path he taught his followers to be on as per the Great Pusthimarg.
